Tumbled Tile Coasters

I have some Tumbled Tile Coasters to share with you tonight. I made this set for my Mum to go with her Mother's Day gift. I scooped the idea for these tile from a gorgeous set that Gina Krupsky of Gina K Designs did and posted on Stamp TV. You can see her tiles here. She's also done up a wonderful video tutorial on how to make these tile coasters.

I loved the butterfly theme idea (imagine that! lol) and I paired another sentiment with it to use as a background. I stamped the sentiment repeatedly over the tile to fill it up and then used a fine grit sandpaper to sand off most of it to give it a muted look. This way it makes the butterfly stand out more. The sentiment reads:

Believe in your dreams and
you can accomplish anything
Congratulations

I bought this stamp today from a lss, but it only came in a ziploc baggie and it's unmounted, so I don't actually know who makes this stamp. I did a quick web search, but with no luck. If you're reading this and know who makes this stamp, could you please let me know. :) I actually cut the congratulations off the bottom of the stamp, since I didn't want to worry about inking it up by mistake and getting it on my coaster. If I want to use the whole sentiment together later, I can still do that by piecing it back together on my acrylic block.

Here's the set of four coasters together.

Here's the self-adhesive cork that I use on the backs of my tiles to protect the table that they're being used on. I buy these at the dollar store. They come in a pack of 20 and they work great.

Well, I had better call it a day, my girls have something planned for me for the morning. I can't wait! Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's out there. Hope you all have a special day. :)

Thanks for stoppin' by! :)

Altered Photo Frame and Coaster Tiles

Note to self...don't leave gifts to make until the last minute, anymore! lol :) Nothing turned out right yesterday...I started off making 4 tiles, finished them, went outdoors to seal them with the spray sealer (as it's strong smelling) and the ink ran on all my tiles! Ahhhh! So, with 5 tiles left, I started over again. The last of the four tiles, I was hurrying and forgot to add the mask over the flower before I stamped the script background over top...yup, ruined another tile! No problem, I had one left, so I used the last one. I was just about to left off the script stamp and this was when my cat decided to jump up onto my craft table and I smeared the top corner of the script! Just not in the plan to get them done uneventful, I guess! lol :)

Next project, I move onto the photo frame that I wanted to alter. I made a beautiful frame that I was so happy with and the last part was to put the glass and backing back on the frame when I realized that it CAN'T be reversed! I had made it with the wider side to the right, instead of the to left...yup, apparently it can only go one way. So, I had to start over. Only problem now is that the patterned paper that I used was the very last piece that I had here in my house. I was so disappointed as I really liked the one that I had already done...sorry, forgot to take a pic of that one to show you. Anyway, I like this one below that I did but the other one really was much nicer. Oh well. That's was I get for rushing and leaving things to the last minute. It's just been so busy here with trying to get everything ready for Alexandria's birthday, starting a new job, then Natalia's birthday, that I didn't get a chance to get to it earlier.

Anyway, I hope they like them. I'm sure that I'm much more critical of my own work, it's just that I like to be really pleased with my work before I give it as a gift. I guess I should remember that it's the thought that counts and I just wanted them to have a little something to remember us by to add with the monetary gift.

Well, I have to get a few things done here before I go to get my daughters at school for lunch. Moe stuff to this afternoon and tonight I have to go into work. Jim left for sea this morning for a month, so my friend is watching the kids while I'm at work. I might get a chance to play in my stamp room tonight when I get home, we'll see...

Thanks for stoppin' by! :)

Tumbled Tile Coaster Tutorial

I finished the tumbled tile coasters tonight for the wedding I'm going to this weekend, and thought I would put together a little tutorial on them to inspire others to try them. They're a lot of fun to make and a nice gift to go along with a cash gift like I'm doing. I just like to give something so that they have a little memento a few years down the road that they can look back at and say, Oh yeah, so and so gave me that.

First start off with a set of 4 tumbled tiles. I buy mine at Kent's, but you can go to Home Depot or your local hardware store. They're usually about a $1 a tile, cheaper if you buy them by the case.

For this coaster, I decided to go with a wine bottle and glass image and a script background, so first I needed to make a mask of my wine bottle and glass image. So, first stamp your image onto a sticky note to make a mask.

Then, cut out your sticky note mask as close to the image as you can.

Stamp your image onto the tiles. I used VersaFine Archival Instant Dry Pigment Ink - Vintage Sepia colour. Although this is called 'instant dry,' it doesn't actually dry instantly on the tiles, so use your heat embossing tool to completely dry the ink. The stamp I used for this step is by Stamps Happen Inc. and it's called 'Wine Bottle and Glass.'

Once your image is dry, place the cut out sticky note mask over the stamped image on the tile. Then, you can stamp the background script over top of it.

After you stamp your background script onto the tile, remove it carefully as to not smudge it. For the script, I used is 'En Francais' by SU.

This is what this step looks like after the mask is removed and a pic of the stamp that I used.

Use your heat tool again to dry the script background, then you can colour in your images. I used two colours, the Merlot colour is by Tombo. The Cork colour is by Sugarloaf Products, Inc. - Whispers Strokes. These are permanent markers, you 'must' use permanent markers so that they don't run when you apply the sealer finish when complete.
To finish off your tile, use a spray matte sealer from Americana or whichever you like to use and this will protect your tile from moisture so your ink won't run. I also add little cork feet to the bottom four corners to protect their table surface. I buy these at the local dollar store. The come in a pack of 20 cork dots about 1/2" in diameter and are 1/8" thick and self adhesive so they're quick to apply.

I hope you decide to try some of these tumbled tile coasters on your own, if you do, send me a pic, I'd love to see what you came up with! :)

Thanks for stoppin' by! :)

Tumbled Tile Coasters for Lisa and Denny

So, I pondered and pondered some more and this is what I came up with. Very quick and simple, I know, but I think Lisa will like this set of four drink coasters for her place. It's just a little something to go along with their cash wedding gift. I hope she likes them. :)

First, I stamped a flower from the set of SU Doodle This onto the tile using StazOn ink. Then, I stamped the flower onto a sticky note and cut it out. I lined up the sticky note mask onto the tile and stamped the script background (Hero Arts - Italian Poetry background stamp) over the mask. I used my heat tool to completely dry the StazOn ink after each application so that it wouldn't smear. Then, to finish it off, I added felt feet to the four corners on the bottoms of the coasters to protect the tabletop. That's all. I told ya quick and easy, yet elegant. :)

Well, time to call it a day. Thanks for stopping by! :)
